How to apply

If you are overseas, you can apply for a passport at many British embassies and consulates.
If you are resident in the UK, the Identity and Passport Service (IPS) deal with all passport applications. You’ll find all the forms you need, and instructions, on the Identity and Passport service website.
However, if you live abroad you may apply to renew your passport while you are visiting the UK. So you can do this, you need to make an appointment with IPS in person. You must also provide an address in the UK, to enable us to post the passport to you. You will have to be available at this address to sign for your passport. If you live abroad, IPS does not accept applications by post or e-mail.

There is a difference between the passports application forms you need for an application from within the UK and those used abroad. Please check that you are using the correct form before you submit your application.
If your passport has been lost or stolen, please go to our Lost and stolen section.

The process
Firstly, please print out the application form from the list below (link to application forms). We have provided some notes to help you to complete your application.
These forms are provided in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF). To open them on screen and print them out, you’ll need Adobe Acrobat Reader (version 4 or above). You can download it free of charge from the Adobe website (link).
Once you have printed out and completed the forms, please initial each page in the box provided. We cannot accept your application if this is not done.
Then please send your form, along with the supporting documents you need and the fee, in local currency to a consulate or embassy. You can also submit your application personally. You’ll find a list of fees here (link).
You must also include two identical passport photographs, taken within the last three months. The quality, style and appearance of passport photographs must meet the standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). For further information on the requirements, go to:  http://www.ips.gov.uk/passport/downloads/photos.pdf)

Authentication by interview
From May 2007, the UK Identity and Passport Service began to introduce compulsory interviews for all first time adult applicants in the UK. This was designed to help stop fraudulent passport applications by improving the integrity and security of British passports.
This change means we can:
• Help fight passport fraud and forgery
• Help protect the UK public from identity theft
• Ensure the British passport stays one of the most secure and respected in the world
The British Embassy and consulates have started to introduce interviews from 1 October 2008. This means that adult first time applicants may need to attend an interview.
From April 2008 it will become compulsory for anyone aged 16 or over applying overseas for a passport for the first time to have an interview as part of the application process. The interview is a vital part of the passport application, and makes sure that applicants are who they say they are.
